If you’re a mom on the search for the perfect baby bottle, you know how difficult it can be. There are so many on the market to choose from and while you may like a certain bottle, the ultimate decision-maker will be—you guessed it—your baby.
When I first came upon the Comotomo bottles, I loved how modern and sleek they looked. Comotomo bottles are wide-necked bottles; they are made of silicone, which is food grade and BPA-free. Compared to other bottles, they are extra heat resistant and safe to go in boiling water, a steam sterilizer, a microwave, and the good ol’ dishwasher top rack.
What are the pros and cons to consider before buying? We’ll go over what to think about before you purchase in our fully Comotomo bottle review.
How We Rated the Comotomo Bottle
Like everything in parenting, bottles are highly individualized, so the bottle that meets your needs may not be the same one for another family. In general, however, Truly Mama rates our bottles on:
- Function
- Budget
- Ease of cleaning
- Portability
- Comfort for you and baby
For function, budget, ease-of-cleaning, portability, and comfort, Comotomo bottles get 4.5/5 stars in our book.
Comotomo Bottles: The Baby Bottle, Reimagined
When my firstborn was a baby, I worked part-time. For the few hours I was at work, I knew my daughter would need the warmth of a bottle and a full belly. The bottles I had were pretty difficult to use: plastic cases with thin parts that always got dislodged. So, when I saw the sleek and modern design of the Comotomo bottle, I felt jealous of the options moms have today.
The Comotomo bottle has several features I wish I could have gotten my hands on.
- One, I love the wide-neck design and
- Two, the silicone base that makes it super easy to use.
Many tired moms will appreciate the wide neck of the bottle because it means no worrying about tiny crevices that promote dirt or mold. No one wants to add that to their plate. Another feature I can’t praise enough: the dual air vents that help to restrict air flow into your baby’s tummy.
My experience with four months of colic was also life changing. I would have done anything to minimize the stomach issues my son suffered from. Having a bottle that minimizes gas pains would have been a lifesaver, and this bottle design would have been the first thing I tried.
Commenting on the Comotomo Bottle: Features to Love
Comotomo bottles are a unique buy because they help breastfeeding moms switch back-and-forth between breastfeeding and bottle feeding.
Here a few specific features we think might seal the deal:
Function
The functionality of this bottle is one of the true defining features. The wide-necked design is unique in that it mimics mom’s breast, so your baby feels comfortable and cozy. With its truly innovative shape, babies don’t feel like they are getting just a bottle. The bottle design is easy to grasp and hold as they get older.
Plus, with 5 oz and 8 oz sizes, there is a wide enough variation of bottle size to support your baby as they grow. Three different flow nipples provide flows from a slow flow (for infants and newborns) to faster flows for older babies.
Cleaning
Cleaning is easy-peasy. These bottles can be hand-washed, washed in a dishwasher, or put them in boiling water for about five minutes before letting them air-dry. One caveat though: sometimes silicone can get cloudy with use or take on food colors or smells (it’s one of the downsides of silicone). If that doesn’t bother you, great!
Space-saving
Whether you’re renting an apartment or own your home, keeping baby clutter tucked away can be difficult. One key feature is that the nipples stack, which means you no longer worry about losing your kitchen counter space to baby stuff. Not to worry mama, your space will be neat – Marie Kondo would be proud.
Safety
Toxic chemicals like BPA are not cool. Fortunately, silicone is known to be a great alternative to plastic. It is even used in some medical devices because it has antimicrobial properties. Plus, it is heat resistant too.
Additional features
We’d me remiss if we didn’t mention that these bottles are a bit on the pricier side. That said, if you buy a whole set–including the 5 oz, 8 oz, and various nipple flows)–it will last you over 6 months of use.
Not to mention, the unique ability to transfer breast milk right into the bottle for feeding your baby more than makes up for the price.
Pros & Cons
Pros
Super easy to clean
Bottle looks and feels like mama’s breast
Dual air vents to reduce colic
Cons
A bit pricey for several bottles
Flow levels can be hard to match up to baby’s needs
Silicon can take longer to warm up
What Comotomo Bottle Reviews Say
From “My newborn loves these bottles,” to “the best thing ever,” moms have a number of glowing things to say. Other reviewers find the design attractive: “I like its design, wide mouth, and the fact that milk powder doesn’t easily spill out.”
When it comes to gripes, a few moms note that you need to be “cautious of the flow level nipple the bottle comes with,” because the “8-ounce comes with a more advanced level of nipple flow and that could cause your baby to get too much milk.” A few other reviewers disliked how the plastic-colored piece becomes hot more quickly than the silicone, which means you have to wait for it to cool down to feed your baby.
The Comomoto Baby Bottle Bundle includes everything you need if you’re looking for a set. It comes with two 5-ounce baby bottles, two 8-ounce baby bottles and slow flow, medium flow, and fast flow nipples, so you have everything you need to customize your bottle for your baby.
Before You Buy
The Baby Bottle Bundle would be a perfect gift for a friend who is planning to bottle feed, and I would personally put Comotomo bottles on my baby shower list. Be aware though, they are pricey. If cost is a consideration, you might want to try them out first (ask a friend if you can borrow them!) before purchasing. That way, you can be sure your baby will love them too.
Additionally, you’ll want to consider the size and “squeezability” of the Comotomo. One of my mom friends who used the Comotomo did find it a bit awkward to use in a diaper bag; the bottle is wider than most standard bottles so she did find it hard to fit into a diaper bag pocket if fully assembled.
Final Verdict
With great reviews and an easy-to-clean base, these are a no-brainer if you’re looking for a good bottle — and price is no concern.
Frequently Asked Questions
What ages are Comotomo bottles good for?
The suggested age range for Comotomo bottles is newborn to 24 months. The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) recommends that “bottles should be phased out between 12 and 24 months of age,” so consider encouraging your child to start drinking from a cup during that transitionary time.
Are Comotomo bottles worth it?
Yes, they are worth it if you have a baby with colic, or if you want a hygienic silicone solution that is free of BPA, PVC, and phthalates. That said, because of the price tag, we suggest trying them out first if you get the opportunity, so you can be sure your baby loves them too.
